I went to a liquor store by Wayne State one night after work, and I came across this sign that made me think. I’m starting to catch on to the fact that in some areas in our city there is starting to develop a zero tolerance towards beggars. There was recently an article written by the Metro Times on the homeless who hang out mostly by intersections at the freeway, corner stores, bars, and dilapidated corners. Each person had their own story; drinking too much, drugs, loss of jobs, economy gone south, and jail being the coup de gras of the matter. It’s so bad now, it’s gotten to the point where the homless are fighting one another over an intersection like dogs who marked their territory-smh. Some of these individuals have had the decency to bounce back in some ways whereas others wait for their Superman at the casinos downtown. Most times the fine rides would zoom past them while those who drive hoopties would drop either a dime or a dollar. I very seldom participate in helping these folks for the reason(s) that 1) you don’t who’s scammin’ who nowadays unless it’s some toothless strung out crack pot who’s aggressively destitute and 2) we have seen some homeless people rise from the ashes and bounce back big time! Kem, Tyler Perry, Chris Gardener to name a few, so despite the fact that “the chips didn’t fall my/your way” can only fly so far, my attitude is that if you want out of your rut bad enough, you’ll make a way out of it and 3) if I’m in a rush, I ain’t got time to dig into my pocket at every intersection on an everyday basis to help out-to quote a line from The Incredibles-“every Harry Hardluck and Sally Sobstory” whose down and out. And the ones I avoid at all times are the ones to who are dressed decent enough to get a real job and make better of themselves. Now some of what I said might consist of dry wit, arrogance, sarcasm, insensitivity, brutal honesty, with ghetto style shoot from the hip, no nonsense attitude, but it’s somewhat true.

At times, I do feel for ’em, but like I said earlier, you never know who’s scammin’ who out here. Folks are desperate-esp those who lost their livelihood, unfortunately. Really sucks sometimes…
